Curiosity by ShortAndSnappy Curiosity by ShortAndSnappy
This little guy was so cute! I took this series of photos just as I was leaving the local park after a long morning of taking photos. I'm calling him William - he's a Willie Wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys), he was catching bugs about 2m away from me.

I didn't have the right lens on my camera, so I very very slowly changed the lens, hoping he wouldn't fly away and took a photo. The camera makes a beep when it focuses, and I think he was very curious about the sound.

We spent about 10 minutes together, and I took over a hundred photos.. he got closer and closer and closer to me, and I went from standing, to eventually lying on my stomach in the grass, trying to get a really interesting perspective shot. Eventually he came too close for the camera to be able to focus on him, and after a little while without the camera 'chirping' at him, he lost interest and flew away.

The image has a nice depth of field, good colors and nice details. The subject clearly stands out and the expression of the bird is very interesting. It seems to be wondering about something or seems to be asking something from the viewer.

The light in the photo is good and the subject is well lit from all sides. The color balance between the dark and light tones is again ok, without too dark or light parts.

The composition of the photo is good as it doesn't have too many distracting details and lets you immediately focus on the subject.

To sum-up, I consider this an expressive and well-realized photo, and hence the rating. I look forward to your next shots! :D

Wagtails definately have big personalities!

We have a pied wagtail that visits out garden and is happen to chase off any blackbird or woodpigeon that comes too close! She's a bit of a poser too!

This is a lovely shot of William :)

That is incredibly cute, and the story adds so much to the picture.

Note to self: If I ever visit Australia, bring camera that beeps.

Haha thanks! This is one of my favourite photos now, mostly because of the story. XD I've never felt anything like the thrill/exhilaration I got when his reaction became clear and he started coming towards me. Just amazing, lol. Spent the whole time in this near paralysis state of terror, trying to be silent and move slowly and not startle him away... but by the end he was so obviously comfortable with me that I was talking to him and telling him how handsome he was... haha. XD Though when he got too close to the camera for me to be able to focus on him and the beeping stop he got bored pretty quickly and flew away. Fickle little thing. :P Haha.

Haha yeah, he does doesn't he. When you combine that with the 'tuxedo' type look of his feathers he looks like some slightly-dishevelled toff, doesn't he. XD

Not as many as I'd like. I was really disappointed. :( Sucks when you think that that's the only time that's ever going to happen, and I messed it up and not all the shots are in focus, and none of them are as sharp as I'd like. :( Sad panda.
